INTERNSHIP DAYS

In my experience, the intern year of medical school is definitely THE interesting one. You have already finished your reading, the great terror of the big finals and have entered the world of reality for all but fantasy! You see the reality behind each case, diagnosis and a huge difference between the big bulkies stats and the practitioners prescription and sometimes made shut in shit for uttering the same in front of seniors. Nervertheless, the greatest thing is that still you are a PRHO (pre-registration-house-officer), you enjoy doing job in which you get a chance to make things wrong like a shit or right like the sun in others head, enjoyable right? Here is an excerpts of few thing what I am enjoying during the time of my PRHO-ship.
1.    The new community:
Patient, hospital staffs and even the visitor see the students as tourist of the ward, coming for few days for 2 -3 hours a day and then showing no face even in the blue moon. When I entered the first duty of medicine, I learned to see the team work, management of each single step and the new world of the sisterhood and brotherhood. New friends come and go, but you don’t forget the sister’s name who first taught you how to put a cannula and draw a blood sample. You will hardly forget the time you learned to call a medicine in trade name and then order the same when you were all alone in the ward addressing the ailments of the patient. In the few days, everything starts to work. The PCM prescribed by you, works and fever subsides. Patient become happier and if you are lucky enough start to get  a salute in the coffee shop addressing as doc-saab!
2.    A new best friend and sacrification of others:
From the very first day of internship I am allotted to have practice with a guy on a group of two and some times of three, and I am hardly to find others for such long time, who were more intimate to me. Very sad right? Uhmm… I was so shocked for the initial few days, OMG, how to survive? Later this mystery man grew to be a man of colors, who is both a scholar and a gentleman. He laughs at all my jokes, and sneaks out of the hospital early with me when work is finished. We both help each other whenever possible, and by the end of the day, we are planning to grab drinks together after work. I wonder where this person has been during my last five years and I used to hesitate, at least I confess here, to be so close of him because I wanted to be more cool. If some of my classmates recognize him, his looks were not that cool earlier.
3.     The Hero:
Some of our consultants say us as the ‘first year MD-PRHO’  when we are to answer the questions of them and residents around in the rounds are with an open mouth, breathing! God,Is that my fault to utter the answer, what is asked to me, if I know! I admit I will forget everything theory by course of time when I go for the 2 years government practice and then return with the red face! Once Prof Sanjeev sir of Cardio asked me a question: which is the phase of a medical student when he is most knowledgeable and is a medical dictionary? To hide my presence, I answered  “the Consultant!”. But everybody knows theoretically just pass out of MBBS knows everything of health concerning medicine, surgery, pediatrics, female medicine and the minors of Forensic too. So it is not a big deal, right? Every intern is a gunner, Yes all of them try to advance themselves at the expense of seniors and some times of others. Human behavior is that each of them has studied very hard by themselves for the finals and basically any student wants to become smart but potrayed as a kind of a jerk, whenever possible, which creates a loud joke in the medical maternity (nursing faculty) especially!

4.    The kind of busy-ness:

My old school friends sometimes call me doc being dog! Drastically you become so busy in hospital stuffs when you clear the finals. They say I am working whole the day and getting zero in return! Who knows, I seem such hardworking but having frequent outings and more often the leisure compared to them. The biggest of the all is when you are not in a mood to have such discussion then just sending a text ‘am at hospital’ will suffice. But sad of all is I miss my home and family out of work!

5.    Learnig Humanism (?):

When I was in cardiology, a patient who had suffered a cardiogenic shock who was undergone  CPR and survived under Mechanical ventilation. One day, after frequent tries of the T-piece breathing he was undergoing a sort of extubation. He was tapped on the back, and we all team were encouraging him to utter some words or have little cough! Of all surprise, he uttered,’where is my ring and necklace?’ we all laughed together, not because he was the typical of the society even in the death bed or grave yard concerning of the money and property but of our success to make him alive! He had intact memory and speech! Salaam chha bhagwaan timilaai!

6.    The Parties:

After the long Guptabaas (four-walled-residency) of about 6 months for preparation of the big finals, you are all free. No sudden tensions of mock-ups, assignments, tests, presentations and the finals. Instantaneously plans are made and applied without delay. No pressures from family as well because you haven’t started to earn. No future plans for the time being except the enjoying and learning in the hospital. So far closeness to the seniors boosts such thinkings and plans. The government holidays and saturdays don’t come, but spontaneous making up of holiday of self even on the Sunday come so frequently! Really chilling huhh?

7.    The camps:

Off the beats, what you enjoy being a junior most person in the DaakTari fraternity is that you get frequent chances to go to the screening camps and the health education program. The discussion in the bus to the camp, delicious meal served by the people, and of the all dancing and antaakshari back to house is memorable! You get more chances to collect certificates in the service of people too! :D

8.    The salary:

Of the all, I will be sinned if I forget to mention, is the first salary, you get text in your mobile, has recently landed up in your account! You are man now, the 1.45kg dicotyledon brain thinks of. Other instinct says, remember and learn better for the future, the taste of self earned money is so sweet! Yea, for a day if my hippocampus does not herniate of my memory, the bulkies get ripped of again and 1-2 paragraphs are gone through! Yes, less is enough but you have the self identity some where! Hahahaha…. :P

will be updating this post when i get things interesting by coming days of internship!
